Announcement Time!

Hey everyone! I wanted to share something I’m working on and nervous about…

I’m writing an eBook! Nothing fancy, like literally 12 pages but I’m doing it! I’m trying to wrap up things I know to be true about YouTube and get it out to people to try and help them and encourage them to “Hit Publish”. This isn’t about me trying to say I know everything about everything, but to encourage others to do more, by sharing things I’ve learned so far.

When the eBook is ready, I’m going to learn how to do the self-publish thing and sell it on Amazon for 99 cents. I’ll make it free to anyone in my Facebook group or on my email list though.

I have a janky first draft version available that I just created and it’s 50% cringeworthy, but it was my first attempt so I’m trying to give myself a little bit of a break. My new version is already twice as long and packed with more content.

While my first attempt may not be what the final version will be, I am proud of myself for being able to figure out how to set up an opt in page through a mailchimp/wordpress integration and how to make a downloadable resource from my website.

I’ll also be creating a video series that goes through each lesson/chapter of the book for my YouTube Channel. Eventually, I plan on creating a paid e-course for video editing basics and this is one step in the process of getting me in front of people who might want to see it.

If any of you have advice on publishing, creating e-courses, I’d love to hear about your experience. I would also love to hear about your experience in trying to create an email list and use it effectively if you have advice.

I think the Instagram/Facebook outage again made me realize that if one of these platforms goes down, I want a way to still be able to reach my audience. While my email list may be tiny with 3 people, it’s still a starting place and I’m going to keep working on it.

If you want to join my email list, head over to the Shelly Squad tab and sign up to see my free video upload guide.

Would love to hear what you all are working on too!

Equipment Recommendations for Starting YouTube | Podmas Day 24

Equipment Recommendations for Starting YouTube | Podmas Day 24

Now that we’ve covered apps for photos, apps and software for videos, of course the next step is equipment recommendations.

I would never suggest that you go out and buy thousands of dollars worth of equipment without trying to make some videos first to see if you really enjoy the process.

You aren’t going to figure out if you love making videos in a normal return policy of any store, it takes time. So I am a big advocate for people to try to make videos with what they have. Start where you are, with what you have, and do what you can.

Here are some recommendations for equipment, If you have great deals you’ve discovered, list them in the comments and we can help each other not go crazy on spending a ton of money of stuff that isn’t needed!

Mistakes I’ve Made on YouTube | Podmas Day 21

Mistakes I’ve Made on YouTube | Podmas Day 21

If you know me, you would know that I don’t always like to admit when I’ve done something wrong. Not that I refuse to take responsibility for my actions, nothing like that. I just don’t like living in a world where I could have, should have, was supposed to do something else and I didn’t.Β

I used to tell people, if you don’t have time to do it right, you’ll have to make time to do it over. I thought I was so wise. Now I realize that mistakes are part of the game, even if we don’t like it. Even when I know I don’t like it.Β

So, as difficult as it is, here I am in a full 25 minutes of me letting you in on a whole bunch of things I’ve done wrong so far, in my YouTube journey. Nothing that I say so far because I know that more mess ups are due in the future. I don’t think it can be helped.Β

Just like the guy that they maybe told you was a bad idea when you were younger, some mistakes you just have to learn for yourself. If you have been following me and thought that I ever made anything look so easy or that I’m never sad, this is the episode for you. A literal sad pity party where I bare everything to you in hopes that you don’t repeat the same mistakes that I have. I hope you feel better after hearing about how sad I’ve been some times. lol. This episode is deeply personal, I hope you enjoy.Β

Creator Burnout, How to Spot It, What to Do About It | Podmas Day 20

Creator Burnout, How to Spot It, What to Do About It | Podmas Day 20

Sooner or later we all feel it, Creator Burnout. It’s been a buzz phrase this year on YouTube with some of the largest creators on the platform declaring that they need to take a break from posting as frequently or at all.

Here are just a few ways that I’ve found to spot it and what to do about it.Β

I hope it helps, and if you’re currently going through it, I hope you can take some time for yourself away from social media and the melee of all that happens online.Β

Why I love TubeBuddy and Why You Might Too | Podmas Day 19

TubeBuddy I love you as more than a friend. You truly are the best friend I didn’t know I so desperately needed on the road to YouTube success. You’ve given me the big fat gift of “time” which is something I cannot thank you enough for.

I don’t know if I could ever do you justice as to the reasons why I love you so much, but that won’t stop me from trying. Here they are, in no particular order, some reasons why I love TubeBuddy and why I think others need to know more about you too.

While I was at VidCon I had the opportunity to speak with the TubeBuddy folks and I told them how I wanted to be able to use canned responses but couldn’t figure out how. They walked me through it.

While I was at VidSummit I talked about the lack of diversity and how I wanted to see them include more women on their channel. They stepped up to the plate. I told them that their site wasn’t intuitive to show people what to do after they install the extension. They agreed and said it was on their roadmap to fix.

I told them that I wanted them to be a sponsor at Seattle YouTube Day. They put Andrew on a plane to come out and present. Each and every ask, each and every time, they have gone above and beyond for me. Plus they have a kick butt product and team.

They want to help you celebrate your achievements and give you awesome certificates. These are just some of the reasons why I will always tell anyone who has a YouTube channel to check out TubeBuddy.

Feel free to check out TubeBuddy for yourself, it’s free and if you decide to try a membership with them at any time, I have a discount code to save you some $$ on any version! Check below for a discount code to save 20% on TubeBuddy!

Why You Should Be Using Rivyt | Podmas Day 18

Why You Should Be Using Rivyt | Podmas Day 18

Today I’m lucky enough to interview my friends Jason and Christopher who are the power duo behind Rivyt. I first met them at the Seattle YouTube Meetup Group. They bragged about being able to set up a website on their site in 1 minute and being the skeptic that I am, I decided to put that statement to the test.Β

I ended up filming a YouTube Video and while it did take me longer than 60 seconds, I was amazed at how little time it actually took, especially given my experience with using other sites like wordpress. If you want to check out that video I will link it here β†’Β https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-OhRGxVU5k&t

If you’re intimidated by setting up your own website and have been putting it off, you should check out Rivyt.Β Β http://rivyt.com/shellysavesthedayΒ

You can started and set up for FREE and get a Rivyt site for your own videos. Ready to take it up a notch? For a yearly fee of $50 you can get a ton of customization options and as an added bonus, start off from my rivyt.com site at http://rivyt.com/shellysavestheday and they’ll will give you 20% off of your upgraded website cost!

Some of the highlights include: nothing to patch, install or upgrade, beginning your site is as easy as searching for your channel name, upgraded options for custom css/shopping cart/automatically adding videos to your library, easy customizations, and a low yearly cost for an upgraded site with more features than the free version.
