Mistakes I’ve Made on YouTube | Podmas Day 21

Mistakes I’ve Made on YouTube | Podmas Day 21

If you know me, you would know that I don’t always like to admit when I’ve done something wrong. Not that I refuse to take responsibility for my actions, nothing like that. I just don’t like living in a world where I could have, should have, was supposed to do something else and I didn’t.

I used to tell people, if you don’t have time to do it right, you’ll have to make time to do it over. I thought I was so wise. Now I realize that mistakes are part of the game, even if we don’t like it. Even when I know I don’t like it.

So, as difficult as it is, here I am in a full 25 minutes of me letting you in on a whole bunch of things I’ve done wrong so far, in my YouTube journey. Nothing that I say so far because I know that more mess ups are due in the future. I don’t think it can be helped.

Just like the guy that they maybe told you was a bad idea when you were younger, some mistakes you just have to learn for yourself. If you have been following me and thought that I ever made anything look so easy or that I’m never sad, this is the episode for you. A literal sad pity party where I bare everything to you in hopes that you don’t repeat the same mistakes that I have. I hope you feel better after hearing about how sad I’ve been some times. lol. This episode is deeply personal, I hope you enjoy.

Creator Burnout, How to Spot It, What to Do About It | Podmas Day 20

Creator Burnout, How to Spot It, What to Do About It | Podmas Day 20

Sooner or later we all feel it, Creator Burnout. It’s been a buzz phrase this year on YouTube with some of the largest creators on the platform declaring that they need to take a break from posting as frequently or at all.

Here are just a few ways that I’ve found to spot it and what to do about it.

I hope it helps, and if you’re currently going through it, I hope you can take some time for yourself away from social media and the melee of all that happens online.

Why I love TubeBuddy and Why You Might Too | Podmas Day 19

TubeBuddy I love you as more than a friend. You truly are the best friend I didn’t know I so desperately needed on the road to YouTube success. You’ve given me the big fat gift of “time” which is something I cannot thank you enough for.

I don’t know if I could ever do you justice as to the reasons why I love you so much, but that won’t stop me from trying. Here they are, in no particular order, some reasons why I love TubeBuddy and why I think others need to know more about you too.

While I was at VidCon I had the opportunity to speak with the TubeBuddy folks and I told them how I wanted to be able to use canned responses but couldn’t figure out how. They walked me through it.

While I was at VidSummit I talked about the lack of diversity and how I wanted to see them include more women on their channel. They stepped up to the plate. I told them that their site wasn’t intuitive to show people what to do after they install the extension. They agreed and said it was on their roadmap to fix.

I told them that I wanted them to be a sponsor at Seattle YouTube Day. They put Andrew on a plane to come out and present. Each and every ask, each and every time, they have gone above and beyond for me. Plus they have a kick butt product and team.

They want to help you celebrate your achievements and give you awesome certificates. These are just some of the reasons why I will always tell anyone who has a YouTube channel to check out TubeBuddy.

Feel free to check out TubeBuddy for yourself, it’s free and if you decide to try a membership with them at any time, I have a discount code to save you some $$ on any version! Check below for a discount code to save 20% on TubeBuddy!

Why You Should Be Using Rivyt | Podmas Day 18

Why You Should Be Using Rivyt | Podmas Day 18

Today I’m lucky enough to interview my friends Jason and Christopher who are the power duo behind Rivyt. I first met them at the Seattle YouTube Meetup Group. They bragged about being able to set up a website on their site in 1 minute and being the skeptic that I am, I decided to put that statement to the test.

I ended up filming a YouTube Video and while it did take me longer than 60 seconds, I was amazed at how little time it actually took, especially given my experience with using other sites like wordpress. If you want to check out that video I will link it here → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-OhRGxVU5k&t

If you’re intimidated by setting up your own website and have been putting it off, you should check out Rivyt.  http://rivyt.com/shellysavestheday

You can started and set up for FREE and get a Rivyt site for your own videos. Ready to take it up a notch? Things to Consider When You’re Doing Sponsored Content | Podmas Day 17

Things to Consider When You’re Doing Sponsored Content | Podmas Day 17

Eventually you’re going to be approached by a brand to do a sponsored post. First of all, let me say congratulations! Second, let’s put on our thinking cap and see if this is a good fit for you. So what are some general questions or guidelines one could follow when it comes to getting paid?

Let’s discuss a few points. You deserve to be paid, don’t do things for “exposure”. Exposure most of the time is, worthless to you in the long run and extremely beneficial to the other party in the short term. If this is you, you may want to consider lacing up your Nike’s and getting the heck out of dodge. Not to say that doing some things for free can work out for you in the long run, absolutely they can, but those types of opportunities are usually best found by you, not the person who is asking.

You should be getting paid for your time and effort and expertise. I know you may feel like you are a nobody, but you are a somebody and somebodies…get paid. Here are some sites that are good for helping you ball park a figure when you don’t know what to start charging and connecting you with brands that are looking for an influencer maybe just like you.

FameBit
GrapeVine
Fohr
Octoly
Inluenster
GeekSmash

Make sure you have a contract and you know who is paying you, what is required, how compensation works, who owns the end result and where it will reside. I hope all of  this helps you on your next sponsored content masterpiece!

How to Love Your Haters | Podmas Day 16

How to Love Your Haters | Podmas Day 16

Can you feel the love online? I hope you can, but occasionally, unfortunately, you’re also eventually going to see someone’s lack of love for you. This could come in the form of a hate comment or an unwelcome comment about your physical appearance.

Today I’m talking through some ways to love your online haters. I get it, it’s tough, I’ve been there, I’ve cried. I don’t want you to go through all the same thoughts I did. I wish someone were around to tell me why I shouldn’t care as much as I do and how I shouldn’t let it affect me the way it does.

It’s easier said than done to “focus on the positive” but in reality, the execution of this can be…challenging. I’m here to tell you I get it. There is something wrong with THEM, not something wrong with you. You are brave enough to put something on the internet that you love and want to share with the world.

The simple act of you doing this shows that you are brave and talented and it’s amazing. The fact that these online trolls have to take time out of their day to bring you down is just really sad when you think about it in the end.

Talk it out with a friend but realize that these people don’t know you and in real life would never speak to you with such venom and hatred. People online get brave behind a keynoard and think it’s perfectly fine to say and type anything that they are thinking and many of them do it just for fun, forgetting that there are REAL people on the receiving end of these messages.

Most of these people would be so embarrassed if they had to show their mother, or grandmother the types of comments and messages they send to people. The likelihood of you ever running into one of these people in real life is slim to none. The chances of them being brave enough to say the same things to you is almost non-existent.

Keep trucking on, that’s all I can tell you. I’m here for you and if you want to swap “best hater comments” online sometime, I might just be down to play the game!

Subpocalypse on YouTube! | Podmas Day 14

It started as a tweet, a notice from Team YouTube about a subscriber cleanup process and a link to an article about what was happening. You could see the panic start to sink in for some folks, “Why is this happening? Where are my people going? How do I fix this?” questions started showing up online and the term and hashtag #subpocalypse started trending on Twitter.

Today we are tackling the subject head on, what it means to have a spam subscriber clean up, what can you expect over what time frame,  and if you should be scared.

Inevitably, it always pops up on any video you see, something along the lines of “Sub4Sub” and “Any small youtubers want to support each other?” The “support” is just an promise of a new subscriber, one who will never watch your videos and engage with your content but you don’t care as long as you see the numbers tick upwards on social blade counters.

According to this article from youtube, Sub4Sub is actually a Terms of Service violation and could potentially get your channel terminated yet you see it time and time again. I don’t want anything like this to happen to you so lets talk about what is happening. I hope that this helps clarify YouTube’s stance on this subject.
